I have this quirk where I like to read the inserts for any prescription drugs I get. Not all of it, of course, but just the part where it describes the mechanism of action of the drug. I think part of it is natural curiosity (how does this make me feel better?), and part of it is just reveling in the fact that I can understand it. Yay science. This is the insert for Flonase, by the way. Boo allergies.
Speaking of drugs, this is an exam question from my Neuropsychopharmacology exam (last…science…class…ever):
Acute ethanol intoxication is associated with CNS depression (decreased neuronal function) while withdrawal from chronic ethanol exposure is characterized by CNS hyper-excitability.Describe the effects of acute and chronic ethanol on glutamate and GABA neurotransmission that contribute to this yin/yan of ethanol dependence.
Sheesh. Talk about taking all the fun out of drinking. I’m gonna have to look that one up.
Driving home from the Casbah tonight, I took Pershing Drive, as usual. It might be my most favorite road in all of San Diego, especially at night with no other cars on it. There’s usually this synchronization between the song I’m listening to on my car stereo and the winding turns of the road that just makes me so happy. One of these days, I’m going to make a mixtape called “Racing the Planes down Pershing.” The songs on it will definitely include the following:
- The Shins – “Sleeping Lessons”
- Silent Comedy – “Gasoline”
- Swim Party – “The Kids Are a Drag”
- The National – “The Geese of Beverly Road”
That’s all I got for now.
Also: “Tim Mays just confirmed you as a friend on Facebook.” I feel honored.
